Why I Choose to Go into the Nursing Field and My Professional Goals

Nursing is not an easy profession. The hours can be long, the work is often stressful, and you are often working with patients in some of their darkest and most frightening moments. The nurse, then, is constantly challenged to find internal strength to pass onto patients. There are always new skills and technologies to learn, and always new challenges in the field. But, to me, nursing is about rising to those challenges, providing the best care possible, and working hard so that others can get back to their everyday lives.

What does it mean to be a nurse? Compassion. Empathy. Perseverance. Dedication. Hope. Energy. But being a nurse also means teamwork, and recognizing that you are an integral part of the process for the doctor, the patient, the hospital staff, and others. Your job is to be what is needed, right when it is needed, whether that be the detail-oriented technician, the dedicated bed-pan cleaner, or the cheerful face. Being a nurse really means being a jack-of-all-trades, able to do everything and always willing to do it to the best of my ability.

Why do I want to be a nurse? Well, part of it is that I remember being a small child, curious about the science of life, loving of animals. As I grew, that fascination spread to the science of our human bodies, trying to understand sickness and health. Most of all, I always felt the urge to help others deal with their suffering, through emotional support and any physical help I could provide. The nursing profession, to me, has always been about people, and a passion to help others feel safe, happy, and healthy. Now that I am a nursing major, I really feel like I have come to understand how a passion can turn into a career, and how I can provide healthcare to those in need.

When choosing an artifact to represent the nursing profession, I was left torn. How can just one piece represent everything a nurse does? Should I choose a tool, like a stethoscope, to represent our listening skills and our work? What about a book, representing all the knowledge nurses have? Maybe a pillow, to represent all the comfort and support we provide. These all seemed too simply, too one-sided. So I have chosen a rechargeable battery to represent my major, nursing. Nurses have endless energy, and even when they are drained at the end of the day, they come back the next day with more of that energy. The energy of the nurse is needed by others to make everything else work smoothly, and just like the battery, the nurse is that constant power helping the rest of the team succeed. The nurse may not always be noticed, but without her, everything comes to a halt, and momentum is lost. Last of all, though unnoticed, the battery, when combined with other tools, can bring joy and smiles to others, and help them to work to their full potential. The nurse, combined with a dedicated health-care staff and quality healthcare, can do the same thing for her patients.

In conclusion, I have always wanted to be a nurse. I believe that working in the health care profession requires an inner passion to help others, to sacrifice yourself to make a difference. It's not a career for everyone, and certainly not one for those faint of heart. But nurses are among some of the most important workers in this country, though they receive no glory. I never perused this for the honors, but rather for the quiet thanks I will receive each time I can see a patient feeling better, getting healthier, or gaining strength. Becoming a nurse is an accomplishment I can be proud of, and I can feel fulfilled knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of others.
