Estrabooks interrogated staff nurses about how much they use various sources of knowledge. The result was that experiential, nursing school, work place sources, physical sources, intuitions and experiences of others where the basic sources of knowledge. Literature of any type was rated as a standard medium of availing knowledge. The researcher asked them to name any one source which was used the most by them. Nearly 38.7% named nursing journals as their best source. However, it was further realized that these weren’t research journals but trade magazines published by nursing professional organizations.
More than 400 nursing journals are listed in Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory. A lot of these nursing journals publish original research and in a wide range of languages. Individually working nurses are not able to find a higher quality research published each year, especially when research relating to nursing is published in non-nursing journals.
When nurses were taught to identify and appreciate research critically, they had responded with interest. However, they found it hard to apply their learnt skills in practice. Their reasons to this difficulty were mostly work pressure and shifting patterns. Certain nurses were interviewed in a qualitative study. This was done in order to inquire about their required source of information, most of them said that they needed reference sources to be precise and to the point. Nevertheless, the midwives working in Northwest of England also narrated that they have difficulty in judging the quality of journal articles. Nearly all of the midwives who were approached said that they needed research reports to be briefer and to the point, jargon-free and self explanatory.
Utilization of research work could be simply defined as the implement of research findings in that area of work that could be as a registered nurse or simply the use of research.
The latest development in nursing is an emergence by the name 'Evidence-Based Medicine' (EBM). This term has been evolved from the primary work done in 'evidence-based medicine' described as: the unambiguous, reliable and astute use of current based evidence. The motive of doing so is to make decisions about the care of individual patients easily and firmly. The usage of EBM defines a process of incorporating clinical expertise with the best provided external clinical evidence from systematic research.
The meaning of EBM is broader than Research Utilization.
The process of following evidence based writing includes the following steps: preparation of a certain answerable question to address to a patient problem or event; a proper research which could be helpful in answering the question; appreciation of the validity, reliability and pertinence to the research evidence; combining the elements of research evidence and information which can persuade the authority to the patient's problems: patient's preference for alternative forms of care, clinical expertise, and available resources; applicability of the evidence based-based practice decision; and eventually, assessment of the decision's result.

Conclusion
These are exciting times in nursing. With the increased emphasis on graduate education for nurses, many important research questions related to the practice of nursing are being addressed using rigorous research methods. There is a strong motivation among nurses to apply the findings of research to their practice through evidence-based nursing. To complement these developments, a variety of resources have emerged to help nurses become evidence-based practitioners.
