Development is not Solely an Economic Phenomenon


Development is a multidimensional process involving changes in structure of institutions and attitudes of a society as well as acceleration of economic growth, reduction of inequality and poverty.

While some parts of this definition describe it as an economic phenomenon, others deal with the general social life of a society where they contribute a lot in development.
Some of these factors include:


Social-cultural factors

This can be describes as a way people think, behave and associate with each other. Emancipation from customs and tradition enhances the will of development, reduces chances of the cache system where people are employed on tribal lines rather than merit. Some tribes greatly condemn changes in their modes of living, harsh rules are enacted and those who break them are punished severely.


Politics

Countries plagued by decades of civil strife are likely to record slow economic growth. Not only do political differences retard development, but causes loss of life and important resources are diverted to finance wars. Peace is an incentive to development, hence political stability contributes much to freedom and reduces dependence and captivity.


Environment

Deforestation and land over use have greatly reduced the capacity of land to absorb moisture, diminishing its productivity and ability to resist drought. This leads to reduced water cycle and eventual unproductivity which fosters underdevelopment.


Population growth

Increased population growth exerts pressure on natural resources, hence reducing land carrying capacity which is the main source of life and support. Most of the resources that can be used for development are used to support the ever increasing population.
Lastly full utilization of the existing human resources and natural resources in addition to proper technology leads to increase in output where in return culminates to increased productivity, proper administration reduces corruption and bribery and if we are to capture the promise of globalization, while managing the diverse effects on good governance. Development retardation is caused by poor administration where resources are accumulated to those with wealth. This leads to capitalism and dualism which are evils of a developing society.
